Hot Flashes, Night Sweats & Insomnia

Hot flashes and night sweats that disrupt your sleep and cause insomnia can affect your quality of life. Insomnia can lead to tiredness, irritability, mood swings, loss of concentration and the inability to perform your normal daytime activities.

Try these techniques first to see if they provide relief:

  • Avoid hot flash “triggers” such as caffeine, smoking, alcohol or spicy foods

  • Dress in layers

  • Keep a small fan by your bedside

  • Keep a cool pack under your pillow

  • Take a cool shower before bedtime

If your symptoms persist, you may consider non-hormonal therapy (Brisdelle) or Bioidentical Hormone Therapy. Brisdelle is a low-dose of Paxil that has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of severe hot flashes.

Another option is hormonal therapy using Bioidentifcal Hormones which are similar to the hormones that your ovaries produced prior to menopause. We use the lowest dose for the shortest period of time.

Both non-hormonal and hormonal therapy are safe to use as long as you don’t have any risk factors that would exclude you from being a candidate for these treatments. In our practice, you would be evaluated prior to selecting the best option for your individual needs.
