Osteoporosis Medications and Side Effects

Our "Lunch with the Doctor" series continued this week with a session on osteoporosis medications and their potential side effects. The take-aways are these key points:

  1. Osteoporosis is easier to prevent (with adequate intake of dietary calcium and Vitamin D) than to treat.

  2. Many women and men are at risk of osteoporosis and its serious outcomes, which include fractures, immobility and even death.

  3. We can diagnose osteoporosis with a bone scan, which most women and men are eligible for after the age of 65 for women or 70 for men.

  4. There are treatments available and while many have side effects, we can manage these side effects and mitigate their impact.
